A penile prosthesis, commonly known as a penile implant, is a medical device surgically inserted into the penis to address erectile dysfunction (ED). This intervention becomes a consideration when other non-surgical ED treatments prove ineffective. The primary goal of a penile prosthesis is to facilitate the achievement and maintenance of an erection suitable for sexual intercourse. There are two primary types of penile prostheses: Inflatable Penile Prosthesis (IPP): This variant comprises three components: cylinders implanted in the penis, a fluid reservoir placed in the abdomen, and a pump situated in the scrotum. Activation of the pump by the patient transfers fluid from the reservoir to the cylinders, inducing an erection. Following sexual activity, deactivating the pump allows the fluid to return to the reservoir, resulting in penile flaccidity. Semi-Rigid or Malleable Penile Prosthesis: These are flexible, bendable rods implanted in the penis. While the penis remains in a semi-rigid state, it can be manually adjusted for sexual activity. In contrast to inflatable prostheses, these devices do not necessitate a pump or fluid reservoir. The selection between an inflatable and a semi-rigid prosthesis depends on factors like patient preference, medical history, and the surgeon's guidance. Penile prostheses entail an irreversible surgical procedure for both implantation and removal. While effective in restoring sexual function, they carry inherent risks, including the potential for infection, mechanical failure, or erosion. Therefore, the decision to undergo penile prosthesis implantation should be made after thorough consultation with a healthcare professional, taking into account the individual's overall health and specific needs.
